I have been blessed to catechise children for 3 years now. I am writing to share what I felt were the most important things to remember of being a catechist.

Most of what I share were learnt, and I continue to do so as I wrestle with the challenges of living the faith. I am thankful to the loving ones who lead me with their light.

So, why do I catechize and why is it hard at times ?

I catechise because I love my faith in all it’s beauty and truth. I love Jesus and want to share his Love with the world. Children need this light all the more and I am blessed to give them that light.

But it can feel hard at times. The reason I have found is that I take myself more seriously and God less so. I forget it is His work and not mine. That, I am merely a hired hand in His vineyard.

Another important question to ask oneself is: When I stand in front of the class and see the faces of the children, what do I see ?

If I see, children the way they are now I am not a teacher. The teacher sees the future and is relentlessly hopeful of who the child is to become. The good teacher does not see the weaknesses that the children bring with them, but the
